The El Peñon de Guatapé rock is located between the towns of El Peñol and Guatapé, and each of them considers it their own attraction, inviting tourists to their place. That’s why they named the rock that way, combining the names of the cities so that no one would be offended. The Indians of the Tahamis tribe lived in these places; they considered the rock sacred and called it “Muharra”, that is, “stone”. The Tahamis worshiped the fish Batolito, which, according to legend, jumped out of the sea to protect them from the wrath of the heavenly gods. In battle, she was petrified and turned into El Peñon de Guatapé. The rock rises alone among the low hills, so it looks especially impressive. Its height is 220 m, while another 2/3 of the stone is underground. It is believed that its age is more than 70 million years. Since the 40s El Peñon de Guatape is under state protection. The first ascent to it was made in 1954, it took 5 days. This is a wonderfully beautiful place. Climbing the hill on which the mountain is located, a divinely beautiful landscape opens up in front of you. Evaluate it yourself on the spot, here, too, your cameras will be clicked many times. Try fruit beer (the famous beer kiosk is located at the entrance to the mountain). Nearby is also the very picturesque village of Guatape, famous for its socle facades, in the form of bas-reliefs depicting various scenes from the life of local residents.
