Welcoming more than 70 million international passengers and linking 260 destinations east and west, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is one of the planet’s premier transport hubs. It’s also a fantastic place to spend a stop-over thanks to a dazzling array of shops, restaurants and amenities—think spas, Zen gardens and futuristic sleeping pods—situated right inside the terminals.
Sure, you could simply nap between flights, but with world-class facilities on-site and downtown Dubai just 5 km (3 mi) away, Travel Code can suggest far more exciting ways to pass the time. Here are ten of our favorites.
1. Eat
With dozens of eateries scattered across all concourses, you’ll find everything from Middle-Eastern grills to Shake Shack burgers. Take a seat for a leisurely shawarma, or create your own globe-trotting tasting tour: Thai noodles, Irish pub grub, Tex-Mex burritos, even Japanese ramen—all in one terminal.
2. Relax in an airport lounge
Feel like a First-Class flyer—no upgrade required. Most DXB lounges sell walk-in passes that include hot dishes, premium drinks, fast Wi-Fi and showers. Book online for deals or flash a lounge-membership card such as Priority Pass.
3. Shop
Duty-free isn’t a side hustle here; it’s a national sport. Hunt down local dates, camel-milk chocolate or the latest iPhone. For something different, buy a raffle ticket—DXB regularly gives away cash, gold and even Bentleys.
4. Go sightseeing
Tours
Numerous operators run half-day city safaris that whisk you to the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Frame and Palm Jumeirah before returning you in time for security.
Independent
The Red and Green Dubai Metro lines stop at Terminals 1 and 3; choose the Gold Class carriage for panoramic skyline views. Taxis and RTA buses are plentiful too.
Once in town, marvel at “world-largest” everything: the Burj Khalifa’s 124-floor observation deck takes an hour, while The Dubai Mall tempts with 1,000+ stores, an Olympic rink and an aquarium. If time allows, cross Dubai Creek to Old Dubai for spice souks and abra boats.
Tip: luggage storage desks in T1 and T3 keep bags for up to 12 hours—handy when you’re racing back for the next boarding call.
5. Freshen up with a shower
Free shower stalls sit in Terminals 1 and 3—though cleanliness varies. Many pay-in lounges include spotless cubicles, and the Health Club (between T1 and T3) sells a shower-only package.
6. Unwind at the spa
Mini-facials, reflexology and 30-minute back rubs are scattered throughout all terminals. Grab a neck massage or full mani-pedi before you re-enter the boarding scrum.
7. Work out at the Health Club
Steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and a 25-metre pool are accessible for a fee near the Dubai International Hotel. Packages start with gym-only or shower-only access and scale up to full-day wellness passes.
8. Stop by the indoor gardens
The Zen Gardens near Gates B7 and B27 (T3) offer bamboo, koi ponds and birdsong recordings—perfect for meditation or simply escaping the boarding-call buzz.
9. Wi-Fi
DXB’s “DXB Free WiFi” network delivers solid speeds for messaging or streaming. No device? Coin-operated internet kiosks wait at most gates.
10. Sleep
Need privacy? Snooze Cube (T1) rents 13 mini-rooms by the hour (min. two). Sleep ’n Fly (T3) provides igloo pods for one or two adults plus optional showers. Dubai International Hotel stretches across all T3 concourses with 6-, 12- or 18-hour packages, while nearby airport hotels offer free shuttles.
