11 Things to Do on a Layover at San Francisco Airport

Got a quick stop-over or hours to spare at SFO? Travel Code has rounded up 11 smart, fun and relaxing ideas so your time on the ground flies by.

1. Enjoy a meal

SFO is practically a food court for the Bay Area, offering grab-and-go kiosks, delis, cafés and relaxed restaurants. Travelers rave about Andale Mexican, Dogpatch Bakehouse and Roasting Plant Coffee, while Lark Creek Grill and SF Uncork’d serve up plated meals and local wines. Chains such as Starbucks, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Pinkberry and Burger King keep familiar cravings covered. No outlets are open 24/7, but vending machines with drinks and snacks stand guard in every terminal.

2. Relax in a lounge

Need Wi-Fi, decent coffee and a shower in one tidy package? Several pay-per-use lounges provide unlimited food and drinks, news, TV and comfy chairs; pre-book online or flash your lounge-membership card at the door. Dedicated spaces also exist for Delta, United and American flyers. For specific locations and day-pass prices, consult San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

3. Shop

More than sixty stores line the concourses, from tech and travel accessories to high-end fashion. Local gems include San Franpsycho for Bay-inspired apparel and Socola Chocolatier for artisan truffles.

4. Take a shower

Freshen Up Spa (International Terminal, pre-security) rents private shower suites for USD 30 – towels, toiletries, flip-flops and a hairdryer included. Military travellers receive a discount. Travellers holding, or purchasing, passes to the American Airlines Admirals Club or Delta Sky Club will also find shower facilities inside.

5. Do yoga

Free yoga studios, stocked with mats, await flexible flyers in Terminal 3 Airside, Boarding Area E (near Gate E6). Hours run 04:00–23:00, perfect for a pre-flight stretch or a mindful break.

6. Pet a pup

The Wag Brigade—20-plus trained therapy dogs sporting “Pet me!” vests—roams Terminal 3, Level 2. A quick cuddle lowers stress levels better than most airport amenities.

7. View the art

SFO doubles as a gallery, hosting rotating and permanent exhibits throughout its terminals. Check the airport’s online calendar to see what’s on while you’re there.

8. Pick up some local history

The Aviation Museum & Library, tucked in the International Terminal’s Main Hall (landside), chronicles Bay Area flight from barnstorming biplanes to jumbo jets. Entry is free, open daily 10:00–16:30.

9. Go sightseeing

Have seven or more hours? Ride BART from the airport station—trains depart every 10–15 minutes—and reach downtown San Francisco in about half an hour. Snap the obligatory selfie at the Golden Gate Bridge, zigzag Lombard Street, ride a cable car from Ghirardelli Square and watch sea lions lounging at Fisherman’s Wharf. Neighborhood explorers can sip lattes in the Mission, photograph Victorian “Painted Ladies” near Alamo Square or stroll 1960s-famed Haight-Ashbury. Museum buffs should note SFMOMA, the Legion of Honor and the Conservatory of Flowers. For more ideas, browse Tripadvisor. Allow plenty of time for security on your return.

10. Wi-Fi

Unlimited, free Wi-Fi blankets the airport. Log on, catch up on email or burn time streaming.

11. Sleep

Seating comfort varies by terminal, but padded benches are scattered throughout. Noise and light are ever-present, so pack earplugs and an eye mask. Freshen Up rents three nap rooms by the hour, and several off-site properties—just five minutes away—offer free shuttles. Explore nearby airport hotels if you prefer a full night’s rest.
