7 Things to Do on a Layover at London Heathrow Airport

You’ve landed at one of the world’s busiest hubs, and the clock is ticking until your connection. Instead of twiddling your thumbs, use these seven ideas from Travel Code to transform that layover into something memorable. We’ve kept the length, detail and spirit of the original Sleeping in Airports guide—just refreshed and re-branded for you.

1. Savour a Proper Meal

Heathrow’s culinary line-up is surprisingly sophisticated. You can slurp noodles at Wagamama, grab elevated pub grub at Gordon Ramsay Plane Food, or sip English sparkling wine with smoked salmon at the Fortnum & Mason Bar (yes, the famed London department store founded in 1707). Craving the familiar? Pret a Manger, Caffè Nero and Starbucks are scattered through every terminal—there’s even live music at Nero in T2 on Sunday mornings. Whether you want a leisurely three-course lunch or a quick snack to go, the terminals have you covered.

2. Retreat to a Lounge

You don’t need a First- or Business-Class ticket to enjoy a quiet haven. Dozens of pay-per-use lounges span all terminals, offering unlimited snacks, drinks, Wi-Fi and, in many cases, showers. Reserve online in advance, walk in on the day, or flash a lounge-membership card such as Priority Pass. For a full run-down of locations and amenities, see the official Heathrow lounge directory.

3. Go on a Shopping Spree

Heathrow prides itself on “terminal parity,” meaning you’ll find many of the same stores no matter where you land. Stock up on duty-free Scotch, snag last-minute tech accessories or splurge on high-end fashion labels such as Burberry, Gucci and Louis Vuitton. If you really want to shop till you drop, make a beeline for Terminal 5—home to the largest collection of boutiques in the airport.

4. Freshen Up with a Shower

Long haul behind you? Long haul ahead? A hot shower can feel life-changing. Several lounges include private shower suites, but you’ll also find pay-as-you-use facilities landside in the Plaza Premium Arrivals Lounge (T2) and Regus Express (T3). Bring your own toiletries or purchase a kit on site—towels are supplied.

5. Dash into Central London

Have six or more hours between flights? Stash your luggage at Excess Baggage Co. and hop on the Heathrow Express. Trains depart every 15 minutes and reach Paddington Station in the same amount of time. From there, the Tube or a quick black-cab ride lands you at landmarks like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London. Want to cover maximum ground? Snag a ticket for the classic hop-on hop-off double-decker bus tour—you’ll also swing by Buckingham Palace, the British Museum, the Tate Modern and more. Just remember to factor in at least two hours to clear security on your return.

6. Stay Connected

Heathrow provides free Wi-Fi—just select “_Heathrow Wi-Fi_,” register your email and you’re online. Need a keyboard? Free internet kiosks are dotted around every terminal, perfect for checking in with friends or squeezing in a bit of business travel admin.

7. Catch Some Zzz’s

Daytime napping spots are plentiful—just expect background noise from constant foot traffic. Overnight, rules vary by terminal: in T3, non-EU passengers may be directed to a designated rest zone; in T2, there’s ample seating but limited privacy; T4’s landside cafés stay open 24 hours if you purchase something. Bring earplugs, an eye mask and an extra layer for warmth.

If you’d rather pay for proper shut-eye, options abound. Aerotel London Heathrow (T3) rents rooms in 6-, 9- and 12-hour blocks, while the Plaza Premium Lounge in T2 and No 1 Lounge in T3 offer private nap pods. Covered walkways connect Terminal 4 to the Hilton and Terminal 5 to the Sofitel.
