KOA Airport Overview
KOA is spread across two small, open-air terminals connected by pedestrian paths. Services are limited but adequate for most travelers: landside you’ll find a snack bar, while airside eateries and newsstands are located near each gate cluster. Because most concessions follow the day’s flight schedule, late-night options are scarce—plan ahead. Complimentary Wi-Fi helps pass the time, and premium passengers (or anyone willing to pay) can duck into the Hawaiian Premier Club lounge.
Sleeping in Kona Airport
Travelers planning to overnight should be aware that airport security usually directs everyone to the wooden benches at the rental-car facility opposite the terminals. They’re functional but hard, so packing a mat or inflatable pillow is smart. For uninterrupted rest you’ll find hotels a short shuttle ride away; details appear in the Airport Hotels section below.
Check recent traveler reviews on Tripadvisor for fresh tips. If you discover something new, please share an update with Travel Code so fellow passengers benefit.
In this guide, we refer to “landside” (before security) and “airside” (after security) to make navigation easier.
Airport Hours
Terminal doors generally open at 04:00 and close after the last arrival (times vary by season).
Rest & Relaxation Zones
KOA does not designate formal quiet zones, nap pods or sleep rooms. If policies change, please notify Travel Code.
Cots
No complimentary cots are available for stranded travelers at present.
Airport Hotels
If stretching out on a bench isn’t your idea of fun, consider one of the nearby Kailua-Kona properties (15-20 minutes by car). Many are on the pricey side, so compare rates on trusted platforms like Booking.com or Expedia before committing.
Airport Lounges
Single-Visit, Pay-Per-Use & Membership Options
- Hawaiian Premier Club – Airside, next to Gate 10. Accessible via annual membership or qualifying ticket class.
Drinking Water
Free refill stations sit opposite Gate 6 and near the restrooms by Gate 9 (verified March 2025).
Food & Drinks
KOA lacks true 24-hour dining. Your primary option is Laniakea by Centerplate:
- Terminal 1: 11:30 – 15:00 & 18:30 – 22:30 (bar 11:00 – 22:30)
- Terminal 2: 06:00 – 22:30 (bar 11:00 – 22:30)
Luggage Storage & Lockers
At the time of writing, there are no onsite lockers or left-luggage services.
Mobile Charging
Look for charging posts at Gates 6, 8 and 9. Each stand offers two AC outlets plus four USB ports.
Showers
Public shower facilities are not available.
Wi-Fi / Internet
Free Wi-Fi is provided. Join “KOA Free WiFi” and accept the terms of service. Signal strength is best near the restaurants.
Security & Safety
Overnighting anywhere carries risk—KOA’s open layout demands extra vigilance.
- Know your surroundings: identify the security post and CCTV coverage before settling in.
- Stay visible: lone travelers often group near other overnight passengers or close to patrol routes.
- Secure valuables: keep electronics hidden, loop bag straps around your arm or seat frame, and consider a small padlock.
- Remain alert: caffeine or short walks can help you stay awake in uncertain situations.
